What is Firewall?

A security control that monitors and filters network traffic, blocking connections that do not meet a defined set of rules.

A firewall sits between networks — or between a device and the internet — and decides which traffic is allowed through based on rules. Traditional firewalls filter by address and port; modern "next-generation" firewalls also inspect the application and content of traffic, and can block known-malicious destinations. A firewall is a foundational control, but on its own it is not enough: most modern attacks arrive through allowed channels like email and web browsing, which is why firewalls work alongside endpoint protection, monitoring, and detection.

  • Filters traffic between networks based on a defined set of rules.
  • Next-generation firewalls inspect application and content, not just address and port.
  • Foundational but not sufficient — most attacks now arrive through allowed channels.

En français

Pare-feu

Firewall: frequently asked questions

Is a firewall enough to protect my business?

No. A firewall is a necessary baseline, but most modern attacks arrive through permitted channels like email and web browsing. It needs to work alongside endpoint protection, MFA, and monitoring.

What is the difference between a firewall and antivirus?

A firewall controls network traffic in and out; antivirus (or EDR) inspects software running on a device. They protect different layers and are both part of a complete setup.
